We have been energy independent since 2012, installing 13.2 k W solar system and 2 PW2's in 2018, making us a microgrid 8+months of the year, while also charging our two Tesla vehicles, and transmit our excess solar energy back to grid. We generated 372% of our energy needs for our all electric home last year. We paid off our solar within 7 years with WA incentives in place in 2012.

Since theres talk of buying a house in this episode, if you want to know when the market is in a bubble, vs a good price, check out the ratio of your mortgage to annual wage (or similar ratios). That way you get the house priced in wages, and you can compare that to historic charts (easy to find on the internet). A ratio of 4-5 times is when it starts to get expensive, if the house is 6 times higher or more than your annual wage then walk away. Conversely 2.5 and below is cheap, and from 2.5 to 4 tends to be fair price.
Btw city and countrysides tend to be priced differently, and regions can vary a lot

Evacuated Solar Tubes are great for hot water heating especially in northern climates with low sunlight. I'm going to add some panels to my radiant floor heating system. I'm going to use them to melt the snow in my driveway so I never have to shovel again.

Solar on the roof of my home covered most of my electricity last year, but a house battery would be a nice addition. Even though I have 48 amp 240V level 2 charging, I usually set it to 10 - 12 amps to charge overnight.

Duck curve turns out to be easier to solve than expected. You face the panels west inst of south and you get a bit less power, but at the time you need it most. It's what they did at Giga Texas.

Anyone here considered the idea of a partial solar install with batteries designed to just "peel away" the heaviest electric use items in your house. A system completely separated from the grid? The battery side would be smaller than what would be needed to carry the whole house but the system could then significantly lower your monthly bill for a much lower install cost. Maybe a small ground mount system in the corner of your property with a tracking mount squeezing some extra KWs out of the system and using bi-facial panels. Seeing the EG4 mini-splits that have a built-in solar panel input/controller brought that to mind.

Here in the UK, solar is shite 🌞💩
However, despite this, our 147sqm all-electric Passivhaus is net-zero and generates an INCOME of about £50/month or £600/year💰
We have 13.8kWp of solar on a 10kW inverter with a 5kW grid export limit.
We also have 2 x Powerwall 2, so 27kWh/10kW of battery storage/power, a myenergi Zappi Level 2 EV charger with a Renault Zoe 52kWh EV that does 12k miles per year.
For hot water we have a myenergi Eddi solar diverter feeding a Mixergy direct electric hot water tank and our only heating is a few dirt-cheap portable electric oil-filled radiators totalling 2.8kW. The house is 20°C inside all year round despite having no A/C.
Call it independence or freedom or whatever you like, I just call it comfortable 😊

I have 36 400 watt solar panels on my roof and RV inclosure. After having these panels for just one year, I received a credit for 173.00 for the full year. This power I produced in BC Canada which has very limited solar in the winter has powered my home and my Tesla model Y free of charge. BC Hydro credits me for my excess power produced and I use a portion of this credit in the winter but still have a credit at the end of the year. I am purchasing a Cybertruck in one month.as my second vehicle and may add a few panels if required to keep power requirements cost free. Also received a 5000.00 government grant and an Interest free loan for 10 years for New windows, insolation and also our solar upgrade. Win Win Win with solar and Electric vehicles. 🇨🇦😎 ps cost us 20,000 for the solar array + my Cyber truck will be my battery backup for up to 4 days if required!

We went through that about 10 years ago in Reno NV. Power company was allowed to axe net metering. Huge uproar, ended up with several utility commission members being recalled. Court battle got metering reinstated although only at 75%. That started my quest to decouple from the utility company. Unfortunately those with the gold get to set most of the rules.

👍🏻🙏🏻❤️ I’d like to get your opinions about dirt, and mould growing on the panels, especially in a mostly wet climate, like the Pacific Northwest. When the panels are on the roof, it’s difficult to properly clean them off, especially if the homeowners aren’t able to do it themselves?

    • @garymunson2493
      @garymunson2493 13 часов назад

Panels, being black, get hot pretty quick in the sun. Do you not get enough sunlight to dry the panels and burn mold and algae off? I would think that would entail a lot of tree shading which in itself would make solar not a good choice. I've come to the conclusion that pre-solar the useful practice of tree shading to keep house cool in summer gets trumped by solar being able to keep a well insulated house just as cool for free plus the advantage of the extra sunlight helping to dry the structure out between rain events. Grew up in central FL and houses that were tree shaded had much more mold on roofs and were very attractive to rot and termites because of staying damp non-stop.

7:08. I think it's funny how people always talk about how EVs save your brakes. Like that's a big expense or something. Brakes last forever, and they're cheap. However, EVs chew up tires, and more than offset any brake savings you're getting. Every time I hear this I'm just like "boy you're reaching hard to find pros."

Great show, in the past, right sizing ment just to cover expenses. Now with cheaper solar panels and batteries. You want to size to have extra power to the grid. Why??
AI, CRYPTO and EVS are power hogs, selling back to the grid will reverse the Netzero trend because they can't build power generation quickly.

You might have the option to do battery back up. Where basically your using this in the evenings. But it's another expense and you are interacting with the grid when you just have the solar. It's still independence kind of like a hybrid system. Keep in mind that I produce way more power than I consume. The excess sometimes can also be paid back to you, but in my case, I don't really care. My electric bill is nothing more than an admin charge of a few bucks.
